Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply
of "life force energy" to improve health and enhance the quality of life.
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you. Reiki treats
the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including
relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results. Reiki is
a simple, natural, and safe method of energy healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.
What to Expect when Expecting (a Reiki Treatment)
If you’ve never experienced Reiki before, you are in for a treat!
But most people have a lot of questions to be answered before they feel comfortable taking in their first
treatment.
I will endeavor to address some of the most common questions in this article. If you have a question not
covered, please start a discussion and ask away!
Q: What will a Reiki treatment feel like?
A: There is no one answer to this question. Treatments are intensely subjective. What I feel may not be
what you feel. But there are common themes in a lot of people, and the most common are warmth and
tingling. As the Reiki practitioner focuses on a certain area of your body, you may feel a warm sensation,
ranging from a pleasant but subtle sensation to full-blown heat. (The intensity of the sensation is not a
signal of strength or weakness of the Reiki energy, however.) You may also feel a tingling in the area that’s
being treated, that can feel like pins & needles, or like a slight itching beneath the skin, or like concentrated
static electricity (but not a shock).
Q: Will the Reiki practitioner have to touch my genitals?
A: NO! Absolutely not. Any responsible practitioner knows that when it comes to private parts, treatment can
be done without full contact. We can hold our hands about an inch or two above the body part to be treated,
so as to not make the person being treated feel uncomfortable. If a Reiki practitioner touches you in what
you believe to be an unnecessary and inappropriate way, you have every right to complain.
Q: Do I have to take off my clothes to have a Reiki treatment?
A: Again—absolutely not. I do not know of anyone who teaches that Reiki must be performed in the nude.
Reiki can be sent to people thousands of miles away—why then would simple clothing be any sort of
barrier? It’s not—you should never, ever feel pressured to disrobe prior to a treatment. If your practitioner is
trying to get you naked, you have cause for concern. However, if your practitioner is also a licensed
massage therapist, you may be asked to disrobe for the sake of the massage. Reiki itself never requires
anyone to be in the nude.
Q: Can I perform Reiki on myself after the treatment?
A: Sadly, no. That is, not unless you’ve also been attuned to Reiki. If you have been attuned, then by all
means, practice away! However, simply receiving a Reiki treatment does not make you a Reiki practitioner.
Q: Is my Reiki practitioner required to tell me what he or she is doing to me at any given moment?
A: No, there is no rule that a Reiki practitioner communicate constantly with his or her patient. And some
practitioners believe in practicing in total silence. However, most practitioners will talk with you extensively
before treatment to tell you what to expect. They may also talk to you during the treatment to get feedback on
how you feel. This is especially true if your practitioner is trained up to Reiki II, which is emotional healing.
However, your practitioner is NOT a licensed psychologist unless he or she also bears a certificate stating
such. You should never feel that you have to tell him or her anything personal, and you should never expect
emotional/mental therapy from a Reiki practitioner. You may experience an emotional release if your
practitioner is up to Reiki II, but beyond that, if you feel you need emotional guidance, find a licensed
therapist.

The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected
directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient
times. The existence of this "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific
experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the
immune system and the healing process.
